What time should you leave for the airport in Bali? ⏰
It’s a question we get asked all the time — and here’s the truth: it depends on where you’re staying and what time your flight is.
Tonight we left from Sanur at 6:26PM and pulled up at Ngurah Rai Airport at 7:48PM — that’s 1 hour 22 mins to travel just 17km 😳
Bali traffic is wildly unpredictable — school pickups, ceremonies, rain, or even a random parade can blow out travel times.
✅ Our tip? Always allow at least 2 hours for your transfer to the airport — especially if you’re heading out in the late afternoon or evening.
✅ Even better? Leave early and enjoy a calm check-in with coffee before your flight.

Wondering when to leave for the airport in Bali? You’re not alone! It’s one of the most common questions we get — and with good reason. We recently traveled from Sanur to Ngurah Rai (Denpasar) Airport, a distance of just 17km, and it took us a whopping 1 hour and 22 minutes! And that was without any major delays... just the usual Bali traffic.
Bali’s roads are full of surprises. Between school pickups, religious ceremonies, sudden rainfall, and the occasional street parade, a short drive can quickly turn into a frustrating crawl. If you’ve got a flight to catch — especially in the late afternoon or evening — it’s essential to plan ahead.
📌 Here’s our top tip: always leave at least 2 hours before your flight, no matter how close you think you are to the airport. Staying in Ubud? Allow even more time. Seminyak or Canggu? Give yourself a generous buffer. And if you're coming from popular beach towns like Sanur or Nusa Dua, don't let the short distance fool you. Traffic bottlenecks are common, especially during peak hours.
✅ Pro traveler move: leave early and enjoy a relaxed coffee at the airport instead of stressing in the back of a taxi. Most airlines open check-in counters 2–3 hours before departure, so you’ll have plenty of time to settle in.
Traveling with kids? Even more reason to avoid last-minute rushes. A smooth airport experience sets the tone for the whole journey!
