Why Hiring a Car in Bali Can Be a Game-Changer for Your Family Trip

Dropping off our hire car in Sanur after a big road trip. Car hire in Bali ranges roughly $30–$70 per day. Not for everyone — but if you do it, make sure your licence and insurance are sorted.

If you're planning a family vacation to Bali, hiring a car might just be the smartest move you make. While it’s not the right choice for every traveler, having your own wheels opens up a world of flexibility and adventure — especially when you’ve got kids in tow.

After an epic road trip around the island, we dropped off our hire car in Sanur feeling a mix of freedom and gratitude. We’d explored hidden waterfalls in Munduk, chased sunsets on the Bukit Peninsula, and made spontaneous stops at roadside warungs selling the best nasi campur — all on our own schedule.

Car hire in Bali typically ranges between $30–$70 USD per day, depending on the vehicle type and season. For families, an SUV or spacious MPV offers the comfort and room you’ll need, especially if you’re traveling with car seats or extra baggage. Plus, with your own car, you can skip the hassle of negotiating fares or waiting for drivers — nap schedules and snack breaks can happen on your terms.

That said, it’s important to be prepared. Driving in Bali can be challenging with busy roads, narrow village lanes, and a different set of road rules. Make sure your international driving permit and travel insurance are in order, and consider booking through a reputable rental agency that includes comprehensive coverage.

While it’s not for everyone, if your family is up for the adventure, renting a car can completely transform your Bali experience. From discovering untouched beaches to enjoying the freedom of stopping wherever curiosity takes you, hiring a car might just be the game-changer your family trip needs.
