Active Island Living: Why Movement is a Way of Life for Families in Bali

Active Island Living: Why Movement is a Way of Life for Families in Bali

No matter where you are in the world—moving your body matters. And here in Bali, that looks a little different but feels just as good. 🏃‍♀️🏄‍♂️⚽ From sunrise surf sessions to sunset beach soccer, from local yoga studios to dusty village basketball courts, olahraga (that’s the Bahasa Indonesia word for sport or exercise) is everywhere—and it’s part of everyday life. You’ll see early morning walkers (jalan pagi) looping the beach path, kids playing sepak bola (soccer) barefoot in a field, and surfers catching waves at dawn before school or work. In Bali, movement isn’t a luxury—it’s part of the rhythm of life. For families like ours, there are heaps of ways to get involved. Swimming in the villa pool, joining local futsal teams (like indoor soccer), taking dance or martial arts classes like silat or muay thai, even skateboarding at local parks or beachside ramps. Chad’s even eyed off joining a weekend sailing group at the beach (more sun baking time for Mia 😉). And yes—there are gyms, fitness bootcamps, CrossFit, Pilates, Zumba, yoga studios… you name it. Whether you want something structured or free-flowing, you can find your thing here. It’s all about moving in a way that works for you. One of our favourite parts of living here is showing the kids how health isn’t a box to tick—it's just part of the lifestyle. It’s picking up the skateboard, joining in a game, or jumping in the ocean because it feels good to move. So if you’re in Bali—get out there. Gerak badan! (Move your body!) Even just a walk in the rice fields counts. And if you need ideas, we’ve got a growing list on Bali Family Finds to help families get active, together. 💪🌴 #BaliFamilyFinds #ChadAndMiaOfficial #Olahraga #MoveYourBody #HealthyLiving #FamilyFitness #LifeInBali #BaliWithKids #ExpatLife #BaliSports #GerakBadan #BaliAdventure #BaliFamilyLife #BalineseCulture

No matter where you’re from, one truth is universal: moving your body feels good. And in Bali, movement becomes a beautiful, natural part of daily life—woven into the rhythm of the island. From early jalan pagi (morning walks) along quiet beach paths to kids playing barefoot sepak bola (soccer) in green fields, aktivitas fisik (physical activity) isn’t scheduled—it just _is_. You'll spot surfers out at sunrise before school, older locals walking laps near temples, and families jogging together just for fun. Here, olahraga (sport or exercise) takes many forms. Our family loves swimming in the villa pool, trying out different yoga studios, or joining pick-up basketball games at village courts. There’s something pretty special about kids learning to skateboard by the beach or taking their first muay Thai class with local teachers who treat them like part of the crew. And yes—for those craving a little structure—there’s something for every fitness style. Think CrossFit boxes tucked by rice fields, beachfront Zumba classes, gentle evening Pilates sessions, or high-energy boot camps. Chad’s even talking about that local weekend sailing club (while I plan my sunbathing strategy 😉). For us, the best part is showing the kids that staying healthy isn’t a chore—it’s joyful. Whether it’s hopping on a scooter to join a beach kickabout, dancing in a local studio, or just chasing each other through a rice terrace trail, we’re staying active as a family. So if you’re in Bali, gerak badan! (Move your body!) Even a slow walk counts. Need inspiration?
