When Dad Says 'No More Pets'… and Now He's the Zoo Keeper
Fast forward to now and he is out here feeding koi, watching guppies, talking to turtles, checking on the tortoises, and fully obsessed with the dog. Every single time: “I don’t want more animals.” Also him: becomes their favourite human. Anyone else’s husband like this? 👀👇
**When Dad Says 'No More Pets'… and Now He's the Zoo Keeper**
You know the story: one pet becomes two, then suddenly your home feels like a rescue sanctuary. And there’s always that one person who insists, “No more animals.” In our case, that was Dad. Fast forward to today, and he's the island’s unofficial animal whisperer. Morning starts with koi feeding at the villa pond, followed by chats with the turtles and checking whether the tortoises got their leafy greens. The guppies? Oh, he gave them names. And don’t even ask about the dog—he's now head of security _and_ daily fetch supervisor.
Bali, with its warm people and laid-back rhythm, has a funny way of opening hearts—especially to animals. We came for the beaches and rice terraces, but stayed for the unexpected moments of connection. For families thinking about life (or even just travel) in Bali, animal encounters are part of the magic. From monkeys at Ubud’s Sacred Monkey Forest to butterflies landing on curious hands in Gianyar, there's no shortage of furry—or scaly—friends.
Thinking of a longer stay? Many villas are pet-friendly, and Bali’s expat communities often help rehome animals in need. It’s a great teaching moment for the kids—and apparently, for dads too.
So if your partner insists “no pets,” maybe book a villa with a fishpond and see what happens. At this point, ours is a certified zookeeper (by family vote). And honestly? We wouldn’t have it any other way.
Any other husbands out there swearing off pets and now leading the pack? 👀👇
