A Special Lunch Date at Warung Kecil in Sanur with My Daughter

One-on-one dates with the kids are something I love — and today was Lola’s turn. We ducked out for a quick girls’ lunch and headed to one of my favourite little warungs in Sanur: Warung Kecil. I’ve taken each of the boys here before on their solo dates, but somehow Lola had never been… so today was the day. This spot is a little gem. Tucked away in Sanur, it’s locally run, always busy, and always delicious. There are a few things I really love about it: You choose exactly what you want, and how much. After having bariatric surgery, I can’t eat a lot in one sitting, so it’s perfect for me. I don’t waste food, I don’t overdo it — I get just the right amount, and I can try different dishes without feeling overwhelmed. It’s a great intro to Indonesian food. The dishes are all displayed behind glass, and you can point, ask, before you order. It’s a low-pressure, tasty way to explore local food — especially if you're new to Bali or just not sure where to start. They have honey chicken. Seriously… honey chicken has been SO hard to find here. But they’ve nailed it. It’s a little sweet, a little sticky, and it totally hit the spot today. The space is small, so it fills up quickly (especially at lunchtime), but it’s well worth squeezing in. There’s also a sister warung out on the bypass if this one’s too busy. So if you’re in Sanur and want a flavourful, local, affordable lunch — talk to the cashier, choose your rice, point at the goodies in the window, sit down, enjoy, and pay after your meal. Simple. Delicious. Local. And even better when shared with a little date on the side 💛 #BaliWithKids #SanurEats #BaliFamilyTravels #LocalWarung #BalineseFood #WarungKecil #FamilyInBali #BaliFoodie #BaliRestaurants #TravelWithKids

One-on-one time with the kids is something I treasure — and today's lunch date with Lola made my heart full. We headed to Warung Kecil, a cozy little eatery tucked away in Sanur that’s become my go-to for solo dates with the kids. The boys have all been before, but somehow, this was Lola’s first visit — and she loved it.

What makes Warung Kecil so special? For starters, it's a local gem: charmingly simple, always buzzing, and serving up consistently delicious Balinese fare. It’s the perfect introduction to Indonesian food, especially if you're not quite ready to dive into the more adventurous roadside warung scene. Everything’s displayed behind a glass counter — colorful curries, stir-fried veggies, crispy tempeh — and you just point to what looks good. So easy, and great for kids too!

As someone who's had bariatric surgery, I especially appreciate the ability to choose exactly how much I eat. No giant portions, no waste — just a few bites of everything that catches my eye. Today’s highlight? Their honey chicken. It’s sticky, perfectly sweet, and honestly the best I’ve had in Bali.

The space is snug, with just a few tables indoors and a couple out front, so it fills up quickly, especially at lunchtime. If you find it packed, you can always try their sister location out by the bypass.

Whether you’re a family exploring Bali with kids or simply craving good local food in Sanur, Warung Kecil is a must-visit. Grab your plate, choose your rice, point at the dishes that tempt you most, and enjoy an unfussy, flavorful meal. Bonus points if it's shared with your favorite little lunch date 💛

#BaliWithKids #SanurEats #BaliFamilyTravels #LocalWarung #BalineseFood #WarungKecil #FamilyInBali #BaliFoodie #BaliRestaurants #TravelWithKids
