When Your Bali Backyard Turns Into a Frog Sanctuary: A Cautionary Tale

Loading video player...

Please advise before we accidentally raise 400 frogs. 🐸🫠💧 Frog eggs have been “saved” from the koi pond… and lovingly dumped into my water feature. In the middle of the yard.

When you picture a dream Bali backyard, odds are you’re imagining palm trees, a koi pond glistening in the sun, and maybe a hammock swinging gently between two frangipani trees. What you’re probably not envisioning? Accidentally fostering a booming frog population. 🐸

It started innocently enough: frog eggs mysteriously appeared in our koi pond. Concerned for the koi (and the eggs), our well-meaning little one decided to "rescue" them by scooping them out and plopping them lovingly into our backyard water feature. One tiny act of kindness turned our tranquil garden into a full-blown amphibia-palooza.

Within days, what looked like harmless jelly blobs hatched into hundreds—yes, hundreds—of tadpoles. Our once-zen waterfall was now echoing with excited ribbits and squishy symphonies every night. It was nature at its most charming... until it wasn’t.

Bali Family Travel Tip: While wildlife experiences are part of the island’s charm, sometimes nature moves in more permanently than expected. If you or your children stumble upon frog eggs or other wild critters during your Bali stay, it's best to observe them in their natural habitat rather than relocate them—no matter how great your outdoor pond may seem.

While we're now adjusting to our unintentional frog sanctuary (and gently explaining to our little animal advocate why we don’t intervene every time), it's a great reminder of how immersive—and unpredictable—life in Bali can be.

So here's our heartfelt caution: come for the beaches, waterfalls, and lush culture. Just beware of enthusiastic young conservationists and the sudden need to Google “How to rehome 400 frogs in Bali.” 🫠💧
