The Simple Magic of Kite Flying in Bali's Afternoon Skies

April 24, 2025

One of our favourite little things to watch in Bali? The locals flying kites in the afternoon breeze! It’s such a beautiful part of everyday life here—especially in dry season when the skies are full of colour and the kids (and adults!) are all out perfecting their skills. You’ll spot them on beaches, in rice fields, even in back streets… and honestly, it’s kinda magical to just stop and take it all in. Sometimes Bali’s charm is in the simplest stuff. #BaliWithKids #KiteSeasonBali #BaliAfternoons #BaliCulture #SimpleJoys #BaliFamilyFinds #EverydayBali

One of Bali’s most heartwarming everyday scenes unfolds each afternoon in the island’s open skies — the simple joy of kite flying. As the sun dips lower and the breeze begins to dance, locals young and old head out with brightly colored kites in tow, turning rice fields, beaches, and even quiet village roads into aerial playgrounds.

Especially during the dry season (May to September), the skies above Bali come alive with an explosion of color and creativity. Giant fish, birds, and other whimsical shapes drift and dive overhead, skillfully maneuvered by their proud owners. It’s a tradition deeply woven into Balinese culture — not just a pastime, but a celebration of wind, artistry, and community connection.

For families visiting Bali, kite watching — or even giving it a try! — is a wonderful, free activity that captures the island’s playful soul. Let the kids join in spotting kites as you explore or make a spontaneous stop when you see locals gathered with their creations. Don’t be surprised if you’re invited to join — Balinese hospitality is as uplifting as the kites themselves!

Whether you stumble upon a spirited kite-flying session at Sanur Beach or while wandering through Ubud’s lush fields, these moments are a gentle reminder that Bali’s magic often lies in its simplest pleasures. So slow down, look up, and let the winds of Bali sweep you into a scene of everyday wonder.
