90’s nostalgia- Royal Otis cover of Linger by the Cranberries on repeat! Second Bahasa Lesson for the week done! Im loving the confidence im gaining when im out and about practicing these days. Learning a language with dyslexia is hard work… but we are getting there! #bahasa #bali #indonesia #language #learnalanguage
Learning a new language is always an adventure, but for families traveling in Bali, it becomes something more—it’s a bonding experience, a window into the local culture, and even a confidence builder. For those of us who grew up in the '90s, it also comes with the perfect soundtrack. Cue Royal Otis’ dreamy cover of _Linger_ by The Cranberries, played (on repeat!) as I navigate the twists and turns of mastering Bahasa Indonesia, dyslexia and all.
This week marked my second Bahasa lesson, and something incredible is happening: confidence. While simple exchanges—ordering a coffee at a warung, asking for directions at the pasar—felt daunting before, there’s a spark now. I try. I stumble. But I’m trying again, and the warmth of the Balinese people makes every effort so worthwhile. Learning with dyslexia hasn’t been without its hurdles, but steady progress feels like both a triumph of patience and a gift to my family travel experience.
For families considering picking up some Bahasa while in Bali, here are a few quick tips:
1. **Start Small**: Learn common phrases like _terima kasih (thank you)_ and _tolong (please)_. It makes interactions meaningful, even in early stages.
1. **Incorporate Fun**: Turn lessons into games or sing along to local songs with your kids. Learning as a family creates shared victories that you’ll treasure.
1. **Mistakes Are Part of Learning**: Whether you’re dyslexic or not, mistakes happen. Celebrate them—they’re proof you’re stepping outside your comfort zone!
And for fellow ’90s kids, don’t forget to craft the perfect soundtrack for your own language-learning journey. Since I hit play on _Linger_, learning Bahasa feels like less of an item on my to-do list and more like a beautiful, slow-growing melody. Bali will do that to you—it turns effort into experience and the simplest exchanges into stories worth sharing.
