The Real Family Recipe We’ll Pass Down From Bali: Grab and Gojek

Taking time to write down my kids’ “favourite family recipes” so they can pass them down to the next generation… And what do I end up writing? Grab and Gojek. Our true Bali legacy 😂

When I finally sat down to record our treasured family recipes from our time living in Bali, visions of bubbling rendang and spicy sambal matah filled my head. But when I asked the kids what recipes they’d want to pass down, they didn’t say chicken satay or nasi campur. They said: Grab and Gojek.

That’s right. Not Grandma’s curry, not Dad’s pancake Saturdays. Nope—our legacy, according to the kids, lies in the joyful convenience of Bali’s ride-share and delivery apps. And honestly? They’re not wrong.

Living in Bali with a family teaches you a lot—about culture, resilience, and the unique art of ordering homemade meals off an app while still in your pajamas. Grab and Gojek are more than just transportation services; they’re lifelines for expat parents. From getting a full dinner delivered from a local warung in under 30 minutes, to calling a last-minute motorbike ride to beat Ubud’s traffic, these apps have become our unofficial co-parents.

Pro tip for traveling families: Download Grab and Gojek as soon as you land. Not only will they make your time more convenient, they offer a bridge to experiencing Bali like a local. Order breakfast from that tiny roadside stall you’re too nervous to walk into, or groceries during a sudden rainstorm nap time.

Sure, I’ll still type out our favorite banana pancake recipe from our go-to Canggu café. But the real secret sauce we’re passing on? The magic of Grab and Gojek. Because sometimes the best family traditions don’t get handed down on notecards—they get delivered to the door in under 20 minutes, scooter engine purring outside.

Legacy, Bali-style. ❤️
