Trying Local Treats While Traveling: Why This Popular Pastry Missed the Mark

For something everyone raves about… this one just didn’t land for us 😬 We found it to be a fairly plain, soft pastry with a filling. We tried the chocolate, but even that felt a little flat on flavour. Not something we’d rush back for… but trying local favourites is all part of travelling, right? Still glad we gave it a go. You never know until you try. #bakpia #bakpiajogja

One of the joys of traveling—especially with family in tow—is diving fork-first into local treats. Food is a delicious window into a culture, and we always encourage trying regional favorites, even if they don’t end up on your personal greatest hits list. On our recent trip, we finally had the chance to sample bakpia, a popular pastry from Yogyakarta that locals and visitors alike seem to love. Spoiler alert: it didn’t quite win us over. 😬 Bakpia is a small, soft pastry traditionally filled with mung bean paste, but more modern varieties include flavors like chocolate, cheese, and durian. We went for the chocolate version, expecting a rich indulgence. Instead, we found the pastry a bit too plain and the filling surprisingly low on flavor. It wasn’t bad per se—just... underwhelming. Of course, taste is subjective. What didn’t charm our taste buds might be someone else’s nostalgic favorite. Part of the travel experience is stepping outside your culinary comfort zone and giving new things a shot—some will be unforgettable hits, others just a good story. Would we rush out to buy another box of bakpia? Probably not. But we’re still glad we tried it. These little adventures are what make family travel so rewarding—you bond over shared experiences, even quirky food fails! So, if you're planning your Bali itinerary or exploring nearby Indonesian gems like Yogyakarta, go ahead and try the bakpia. You might discover a new favorite… or at least enjoy a good laugh with your kids over a small, puzzling pastry. After all, it's not about loving every bite—it’s about embracing the journey. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦🥮 #Bakpia #BakpiaJogja #FamilyTravel #TasteTest #TravelWithKids #BaliEats
