Family Adventures Beyond Bali: Exploring Yogyakarta with Kids
4 kids, backpacks packed and off for a few days beyond Bali. We had no idea what to expect from Yogyakarta with kids, but we were ready to explore, learn and see a completely different side of Indonesia together. Watch the full adventure on our YouTube.
When most people think of a family trip to Indonesia, Bali quickly tops the list. But for our crew—two parents, four kids, and a sense of adventure—we wanted to go further. Enter: Yogyakarta. With backpacks packed and curiosity high, we hopped a short flight and discovered a destination full of culture, history, and kid-friendly fun.
Yogyakarta, or "Jogja" as locals affectionately call it, instantly surprised us with its welcoming vibe and accessibility for families. First up, we explored the majestic Borobudur Temple, the world’s largest Buddhist monument. Our kids were amazed by the ancient stone carvings and panoramic views—learning history had never been so hands-on.
Later, we wandered through the Water Castle in the Kraton area and took a colorful becak ride through bustling local markets. Street food tastings (hello, bakpia!) turned into spontaneous lessons in Indonesian flavors, and there was always a local eager to share a smile or story.
One of the highlights? A sunrise hike to Punthuk Setumbu—totally worth the 4 AM wake-up call. Our little adventurers loved spotting Mount Merapi, and we treasured the quiet moments together above the clouds.
Traveling to Yogyakarta with kids is completely doable and incredibly rewarding. We learned to move slower, embrace the unexpected, and connect deeply with a different slice of Indonesia that most tourists never see.
If you're planning a trip to Bali with your family, consider carving out a few days for Yogyakarta. It’s more than a cultural gem—it’s a family adventure that just might become the highlight of your trip.
