The Great Bali Lizard Debate: Butterfly Snack or Nature’s Design?

I need the internet’s help on this one 😂🦎 Found this lizard in our Bali backyard with a yellow flappy leaf-looking thing under its chin… The boys are convinced it’s a butterfly stuck in its mouth. I’m convinced it’s part of the lizard. Who’s right?! What is this thing?! And can someone please send Robert Irwin immediately 🆘😆

🐊 While exploring our Bali backyard during a family getaway, we stumbled upon a tiny creature that sparked a BIG debate. A lizard, about the size of my hand, darted across the garden with what looked like a bright yellow flap under its chin. Cue the confusion! "It’s eating a butterfly!" shouted the kids, convinced they’d caught nature in action. I wasn’t so sure. This vibrant, leaf-like thing seemed too perfectly attached, fluttering only when the lizard puffed it out deliberately. After some quick detective work (read: frantic Googling and sending a few blurry pics to overly confident friends), we learned the truth. It turns out, this mystery flap is called a dewlap — a natural extension of skin some lizards use to communicate or attract mates. Think of it as the lizard version of a flashy billboard. So no, not a butterfly snack — just another fascinating feature of Bali’s amazing biodiversity. If you're traveling to Bali with kids, these little moments are what make the island so exciting. From forest monkeys in Ubud to beachside geckos and garden-dwelling lizards with built-in accessories, wildlife is everywhere. It’s a great chance to spark curiosity in young explorers and turn vacation into a fun science lesson. Next time you’re wandering through Bali’s lush backyards or rice fields, keep your eyes open — you never know what Mother Nature might wave at you… or flash from under her chin! And if Robert Irwin happens to read this: we’ve got your next field assignment lined up. 😉 Happy wildlife spotting!
