Discovering Gudeg: The Must-Try Javanese Dish You’ll Love on Your Bali Travels
Asked our driver for one food we absolutely have to try in Yogyakarta… and the answer was Gudeg 🍽️ A traditional Jogja dish made from young jackfruit slow-cooked in coconut milk and spices usually served with chicken, tofu, or tempeh. Sweet, rich, and very Java. He did laugh and say, “Balinese people think Javanese food is too sweet” 😂 Guess we’ll be the judges. Food is culture and this is exactly how we love discovering new places. Have you tried gudeg before?
When planning your family trip to Bali, don’t miss a flavorful side adventure into the heart of Javanese culture — through its food! One dish you absolutely have to try is Gudeg, a beloved specialty from Yogyakarta that’s as unique as it is delicious.
We asked our friendly driver what’s the one food we just couldn’t leave Java without tasting, and without hesitation, he said: “Gudeg.” 🍽️
Gudeg is a traditional dish made from young jackfruit, slow-cooked in coconut milk and an aromatic blend of spices until it turns tender, sweet, and rich. Usually served with simmered chicken, tofu, hard-boiled egg, or tempeh, it’s a hearty and flavorful meal that's deep-rooted in Yogyakarta’s cultural identity. Locals even call Yogyakarta "Kota Gudeg" — the city of Gudeg.
Now, here’s the fun part — our driver laughed and told us, “Balinese people think Javanese food is too sweet!” 😂 Well, we’ll just have to judge for ourselves, won’t we?
Food isn’t just about taste — it’s a gateway to understanding a place and connecting with its people. For families visiting Bali who are curious and adventurous eaters, detouring to Yogyakarta (or even finding a local spot that serves Gudeg) is a delicious way to experience the rich and varied flavors of Indonesia.
Whether it’s the tender jackfruit, comforting coconut richness, or a mix of savory sides, there’s something in Gudeg for everyone to love. Planning activities for the whole family? Add a food discovery quest to the list. And who knows — sweet might just become your new favorite flavor of adventure.
Have you tried Gudeg yet? If not, now’s the perfect time to find out what all the (sweet) fuss is about!
