How a Scary Allergy Moment Sparked One of Our Most Useful Travel Tools in Bali

Sometimes the universe gives you a nudge — or, in our case, about 12! Over the course of just one week, we had multiple families in our Bali Family Finds community reach out asking about allergy cards and translations. So, we listened — and created an allergy card with translations you can access directly inside Bali Family Finds for free! But what we didn’t expect was how quickly that resource would become personal. Shortly after launching the allergy card, one of our own kids had a severe reaction to something we’d eaten — and honestly, it was scary. That moment kicked off our deep dive into allergy testing here in Bali. Yes, you can get tested here. We took our second eldest to a paediatrician for a referral, got the blood work done, and had one of the tests back in hours — the rest within a few days. The results were crystal clear: a significant allergy to shellfish. So now, like many of you, we’re using our BFF Allergy Card every time we eat out. We’ve also removed all shellfish products from our home, and we’re navigating this new terrain as a family. If you’re travelling with allergies or living here like us, this isn’t something to brush off. But it also doesn’t need to ruin your food adventures. Being prepared helps you feel confident and safe — and we’re so glad we now have tools to share that can help other families do the same.
Sometimes travel brings unexpected challenges — and sometimes those challenges turn into your best resources. That’s exactly what happened to us in Bali.

It all started when several families in our Bali Family Finds community reached out in the same week, asking for help navigating food allergies. We got the message loud and clear: families needed a reliable way to communicate food restrictions in restaurants. So we created our Allergy Card with Bahasa Indonesia translations — and made it free for our whole community.

What we didn’t know was how quickly we’d end up relying on it ourselves.

Just days after launching the card, our own child had a severe allergic reaction. It was a terrifying moment — and it pushed us straight into Bali’s healthcare system for answers. Thankfully, you can get allergy testing here. We visited a trusted paediatrician, arranged for blood work, and received initial results on the same day. Within days, we got the full report: our child had a shellfish allergy.

Since then, we’ve completely changed the way we eat out, using our Allergy Card every single time — and it’s helped tremendously in giving clear, respectful instructions to local restaurants. We’ve also removed all shellfish from our home and adjusted as a family.

If your child has allergies and you’re visiting or living in Bali, don’t panic — but do prepare. With the right tools, like our BFF Allergy Card, and access to good local medical care, you’ll feel far more confident navigating Bali’s vibrant (and delicious) food culture.

➡️ Download the free allergy card inside our community and travel smarter, not scarier.

#BaliFamilyFinds #TravelWithAllergies #BaliWithKids #FamilyTravelSafety #AllergyAware #RealLifeInBali
