Why We’re Rethinking Homeschooling While Living Abroad in Bali

Loading video player...

This video was from about a year ago and while yes, we are still homeschooling, a few things have changed. We’ve stepped out of the Australian reporting system – living overseas puts us in a bit of a grey area anyway! For now, we’re still following an Aussie curriculum, but I’ll be honest… it’s doing my head in and I’m just about ready to ditch it. Our Year 9 kiddo works pretty independently with weekly check-ins, while with the younger ones we’ve shifted back from so much online learning to more good old-fashioned worksheets and paper. Because let’s be real… Siri makes things too easy, predictive text is a cheeky spelling helper, voice-to-text is next level, and don’t even get me started on ChatGPT at their grade level 😂 Homeschooling is a journey, and we’re figuring it out as we go. If you homeschool, travel school, or do a mix of both—what works best for your family? Would love to hear your tips! #HomeschoolJourney #TravelSchooling #BaliWithKids #HomeschoolLife

**Why We’re Rethinking Homeschooling While Living Abroad in Bali** A year ago, we shared a video chatting about our homeschooling setup here in Bali. Fast forward to now—yes, we're still at it, but oh boy, how things have shifted! We've officially stepped out of the Australian reporting system. Living overseas lands us in a bit of a legal grey zone, but honestly, that flexibility has been liberating. We're loosely sticking to the Aussie curriculum, but I’ll admit—it’s becoming more of a struggle than a structure. The rigidity just doesn’t always vibe with our travel lifestyle or our kids’ learning styles. Our Year 9 teen is pretty self-sufficient now, doing weekly check-ins with us and managing most of his learning on his own. Meanwhile, for our younger ones, we’ve actually peeled back the screen-time and returned to worksheets and pen and paper. Why? Because Siri, spell check, and voice-to-text were just making things a bit _too_ easy! And don’t get me started on how ChatGPT could write entire essays for them if we let it 😅 Homeschooling on the road is genuinely a journey—full of trial and error, re-evaluations, and pivots. Some days are incredible: learning Balinese culture firsthand or doing math by tallying beachside coconut sales. Other days? Not so much. But we’re learning right alongside our kids, and that alone makes it worth it. So, for other families combining homeschooling with travel: what’s working for you? Are you loving a structured system, or flowing more organically? We’d love to hear your tips and what helps your family thrive. #HomeschoolJourney #TravelSchooling #BaliWithKids #HomeschoolLife
