Homeschool Freedom & Solar Oven S'mores: A Sweet Learning Moment in Bali

This might be one of the most fun homeschool experiments we’ve ever done. A solar oven making s’mores ☀️🍫 Definitely one of the most delicious too 😅 This used to be something we had to document for reporting. And while I loved capturing the learning, I don’t miss that side at all. Once you remove your kids from the Australian school system, the responsibility falls solely on you and here in Indonesia there’s no rule that says they must be enrolled in a school. It’s a bit of a no man’s land… but one we’ve chosen intentionally. We’re still educating, still following learning pathways, and when the kids want school, we’ll explore that. But 2.5 years in, we’re still loving homeschooling; especially the freedom to explore the island on a random Tuesday 🤍

There’s something magical about learning outside the lines—with chocolate in hand, no less. On a sun-drenched Tuesday in Bali, we turned everyday learning into a delicious science experiment with our homeschool crew. Cue the solar oven and a round of gooey, golden s’mores. ☀️🍫 What began as a simple lesson on renewable energy quickly became one of our favorite family memories. Using a pizza box, foil, and the intense Bali sunshine, the kids constructed a solar oven and watched in delight as their chocolate and marshmallows melted into a sweet, sticky masterpiece. It was hands-on, educational fun—without the pressure of checkboxes and formal reporting. That’s the beauty of homeschooling in Bali. Since Indonesia doesn’t require school enrollment for foreigners, families have the freedom to craft their own curriculum at their own pace. For us, that means chasing curiosity through island adventures, museum visits, and yes—even backyard science experiments with a chocolatey twist. Two and a half years into this worldschooling journey, we’re still embracing the flexibility. Some days look like math worksheets beneath a palm tree; others, like surfing at sunrise or spontaneous temple visits. Bali makes it easy to blend learning with lifestyle—offering endless opportunities to explore, discover, and connect. If you’re considering homeschooling while traveling, know this: it’s not always easy, but it’s always rewarding. Especially when your science lesson ends with melted marshmallows and sticky fingers. So, pack that pizza box, grab some graham crackers, and let the Balinese sun do its sweet, gooey magic. Because in this corner of paradise, the best learning often happens outside the classroom—and sometimes, around a very melty s’more.
