Today, we celebrate one of the most significant days on the Indonesian calendar: Independence Day. On August 17, 1945, Indonesia declared itself as the Republic of Indonesia, marking the end of over a century of Dutch colonial rule.
Known locally as Hari Ulang Tahun Kemerdekaan Republik Indonesia, or simply HUT RI, this day is a powerful reminder of the nation’s journey to freedom. It’s also affectionately called “Tujuhbelasan,” meaning “Seventeenth,” commemorating the day with pride and unity.
Independence Day became an official holiday on its first anniversary in 1946, and its significance continues to resonate deeply with the Indonesian people.
