One thing we've learnt over the last few years is this... If a local friend tells you to visit somewhere, go. Some of our favourite places in Bali have never come from Instagram, Google or travel blogs. They've come from someone saying, "You should go here. I think you'll love it." This was one of those recommendations. Lusi and Pakan isn't the sort of place you'd necessarily stumble across on your own, but I'm so glad we did. Nestled beside the river, it's one of those peaceful spots where you immediately feel yourself slowing down. There are beautiful gardens to wander through, a lovely café to sit and enjoy lunch, and the sound of running water that somehow makes everything feel calmer. What made it even more special was seeing a group of local women sitting at large traditional weaving looms, patiently creating beautiful kain endek by hand. Watching them work was a reminder that some traditions can't be rushed. Every thread is placed with purpose, and every piece tells a story that's been passed down through generations. I also learnt that this place was badly affected by the floods last year. The river that makes it so beautiful also caused so much damage, forcing it to close while everything was repaired and rebuilt. Now it's open again. Walking through the gardens, you'd never know just how much work had gone into bringing it back to life. It's a lovely reminder of the resilience you see so often here in Bali. Communities roll up their sleeves, rebuild and keep moving forward. I think that's another reason I love taking local recommendations. You're not just discovering a beautiful café or garden. You're supporting families, artisans and small businesses that are part of the community. You're helping places like this continue to thrive, and in return you get an experience that feels far more authentic than somewhere designed purely for tourists. So if you're exploring this part of Bali, I'd definitely add Lusi and Pakan to your list. And if a local tells you about a hidden gem while you're here... Take their advice.
