Discovering Padang Flavours: A Hidden Culinary Gem in Sanur, Bali
Across Bali, you’ll spot glass-fronted windows stacked high with plates of colourful food — this is Masakan Padang, or Padang cuisine. Originating from West Sumatra, Padang food is known for its rich flavours, coconut-based sauces, and generous use of chili, turmeric, and lemongrass. It’s served nasi padang style — meaning you choose from a delicious display of dishes and pay for what you eat. On this day, we tried nasi putih (white rice), beef rendang, tempe kripik (crispy tempeh), cassava leaves, corn fritters, and fried chicken — and wow, the flavours were incredible. Every bite had that perfect mix of spice, crunch, and comfort. I bought two full plates for just 9.60 AUD total, and honestly, it was some of the best food I’ve had in Bali. This particular warung is tucked away in Sanur on Danau Poso, and it’s a perfect example of how incredible local food can be — simple, authentic, and made with love. If you’ve been hesitant to try Padang food, this is your sign. Step up to the window, point to what looks good, and dive in — it’s one of the most delicious ways to experience Indonesian culture. #BaliEats #MasakanPadang #BaliWithKids #BaliFamilyFinds #EatLikeALocal
