Why Renting in Bali Means Being Your Own Handyman

Cooking in Bali is almost always done on gas… which is great until your regulator decides to make life difficult. Ours has been giving us grief since we moved in, so today was the day. New regulator, swap it over, problem solved. When you rent here in Bali, little bits of maintenance fall on you, and honestly, sometimes it’s easier (and safer!) to replace things properly instead of relying on endless bandaid fixes… especially when it comes to gas!

Renting a home in Bali offers families the chance to enjoy a more immersive travel experience—but it also comes with a unique set of responsibilities. One of the most important things to know? You’ll likely be your own handyman from time to time.

Take gas cooking, for example. It’s the norm in Bali, and when it works, it’s fantastic—affordable, efficient, and perfect for whipping up local market finds. But when your gas regulator starts acting up, as ours did shortly after moving in, you’ve got to decide: call for a fix or take matters into your own hands?

In our case, after battling with quick fixes and inconsistent flames, we opted to replace the regulator entirely. It was a simple switch that instantly improved both safety and function. And that’s the key takeaway: in Bali, tackling minor household repairs yourself isn’t just common, it’s often the smartest choice.

Unlike many Western rental setups, Bali rentals often operate with a 'you break it, you fix it' mindset. From air conditioners to plumbing quirks and, yes, gas issues, the responsibility typically falls on renters. Safety should always come first—especially for families. That might mean hiring a local handyman for advice, learning how things work in your home, or replacing faulty parts with quality alternatives.

If you're planning an extended stay in Bali, don’t just pack sunscreen—bring a little DIY spirit. Knowing how to handle small maintenance challenges not only keeps your family safe but also ensures your time on the island flows a little smoother.

After all, a confident cook starts with a reliable flame!
