When we moved our family of six to Bali, we weren’t prepared for just how expensive schooling could be. On paper, Bali seems like an affordable paradise — but dig into the cost of international schools and the numbers tell a different story. Top-tier international schools can easily run you $8,000–$20,000 USD per child per year. That’s before factoring in uniforms, books, transport, lunch plans, school trips, and extracurriculars. Multiply that by four kids, and the math quickly becomes overwhelming. We explored all the options: Montessori-inspired kindergartens, forest schools, and progressive learning hubs scattered around Canggu and Ubud. While they offer incredible programs and diverse communities, the price tag just wasn’t sustainable for our long-term Bali life. That’s when we looked inward — and started our homeschooling journey. Today, our kids follow a blended curriculum that suits their interests and learning styles. Mornings are for focused academics using online platforms and custom lesson plans. Afternoons are spent diving into local culture — Balinese dance, surf lessons, community projects, and temple visits. Bali itself has become the most enriching classroom of all. Homeschooling also gives us the freedom to travel around the island, set our own schedule, and nurture a stronger family bond. And yes — we’ve budgeted significantly less than what we would have spent on traditional school fees. If you're considering a move to Bali with kids, it’s worth evaluating your educational options carefully. Whether it’s international school or homeschooling, the choice depends on your family’s values, lifestyle, and budget. Want the full cost breakdown of raising a family in Bali?
