Raising Responsible Kids While Living the Bali Life — One Pet at a Time

Teaching Responsibility Through Everyday Life (and a Few Extra Creatures!) Just like all parents, we juggle the challenge of teaching our kids responsibility—giving them jobs that help them grow while making sure they don’t feel overwhelmed. Some days, it’s a smooth process. Other days… well, let’s just say we’re still figuring it out. 😅 The older boys have their set jobs each day, and the younger kids have theirs too. Whether it’s helping with laundry, dishes, tidying up, or even little things like remembering to bring in their own plates after meals, we try to keep everyone involved in running the home. But when it comes to pets, we’ve always taken a slightly different approach. We’ve never assigned the responsibility of caring for our animals to just one child. For us, when an animal joins our family, it’s a joint decision, and with that comes a shared responsibility. It’s not “your pet, your job.” It’s our pet, and we all pitch in to make sure they’re cared for and happy. From our tortoises getting their morning greens, to the fish tanks being cleaned, to Chips the turtle getting his weekly tooth brushing, and now keeping an eye on our newest tiny swimmers, it’s all part of the daily rhythm. The kids naturally take turns checking in, feeding them, and making sure everyone is okay—without us ever having to enforce a strict ‘chore list’ for them. We’ve found that by making it a family effort rather than an individual task, it teaches them responsibility in a way that feels natural rather than forced. And honestly? Seeing them take care of our little zoo without being told is one of those small parenting wins that makes us feel like we might be doing something right. 💛 Do you assign pet care as a specific responsibility, or is it more of a team effort in your home? Teaching responsibility doesn’t always have to mean chore charts and star stickers—sometimes, it just means letting everyday life do the teaching. As a family living in Bali, we’ve found that real lessons often come with a pinch of sand and a splash of turtle water. 🐢 While each of our kids has daily responsibilities—like dishes, tidying, or laundry—our approach to pet care has taken on a life of its own. Instead of the classic “your pet, your job” setup, we treat each animal as a shared addition to our family. From our tortoises munching their morning greens to Chips the turtle enjoying his weekly (yes, weekly!) toothbrush session, it’s truly a group effort. With everyone pitching in naturally, without strict rules or reminders, responsibility becomes less of a burden and more of a family rhythm. Our little Bali-based zoo—fish tanks, turtles, and all—has become a quiet classroom for life skills. The kids learn accountability, compassion, and teamwork just by caring for another living being... and they barely realize it’s a lesson at all. Of course, not every day is perfect. There are missed feedings and forgotten tank cleanings—but those hiccups are part of the learning too. And when everyone steps up to help without being asked? That’s a parenting high-five moment. Whether you’re raising kids in Bali or just visiting with your crew, don’t underestimate the power of small, shared responsibilities—especially the kind that wiggles or swims. 🌊🐾 Do you divvy up pet care responsibilities, or is it all hands on deck in your home too? We'd love to hear how your family finds balance and learns together! #BaliFamilyLife #RaisingResponsibleKids #PetsInParadise #ExpatsInBali #FamilyRoutine #LifeSkillsThroughLiving #KidsAndCreatures #ParentingInBali
