There are a few things Australians living overseas will happily pay ridiculous amounts of money for. Tim Tams. Shapes. Proper meat pies. And, apparently... Vegemite. We recently went to make some toast and discovered we had two jars left in the cupboard. Perfect. Or so we thought. The first jar had somehow transformed into what can only be described as a high school science experiment. I'm still not entirely sure how Vegemite managed to grow mould, but somehow it had. "No worries," I thought. "We've still got one more." Wrong again. We opened the second jar only to discover the underside of the lid had become its own little petri dish of mould. At that point there was no denying it. An emergency Vegemite run was required. Now, you can absolutely buy Vegemite in Bali. It's stocked in quite a few supermarkets that cater to imported products, which is fantastic when the craving hits. What isn't fantastic... is the price. This little 220g jar cost 112,000 rupiah. That's roughly $11 Australian. For Vegemite. I actually stood there staring at the shelf for a minute wondering whether I loved Vegemite enough to justify it. Turns out... I do. It's funny how moving overseas changes your perspective on food. Things you barely thought about back home suddenly become little pieces of comfort. A slice of toast with Vegemite isn't just breakfast anymore. It's familiar. It's home. It's something that instantly transports you back to Australia. So yes, I bought the jar. I winced a little at the checkout. Then I went home, made myself a piece of Vegemite toast and decided it was worth every cent. Now tell me... What's the one food from home you'd reluctantly pay an outrageous amount of money for if you couldn't get it where you lived? 🇦🇺😅
