But have you ever wondered who Gajah Mada was, or why his name appears on streets and landmarks across Indonesia? Gajah Mada was a powerful military leader and prime minister of the Majapahit Empire, one of the great kingdoms of the Indonesian archipelago. And as we walked along Jalan Gajah Mada during our Denpasar Heritage Walk, we started learning more about the Majapahit influence and the history behind the names and places we so often drive straight past. This is one of the reasons we’ve loved doing these walking tours.
