๐ This was, without a doubt, the best snorkelling we've done anywhere in Bali. If you've never heard of the Biorock Project in Pemuteran, you're not alone... but it deserves a spot on every Bali itinerary. Tucked away in North West Bali, around 4 to 5 hours from the airport, Pemuteran is a quiet coastal village that's become world-famous for something incredibly special... restoring coral reefs. Instead of simply hoping damaged reefs recover, the Biorock Project uses low-voltage electrical currents running through underwater metal structures to encourage coral to grow faster, stronger and become more resilient. Over the past two decades, the local community has transformed what was once a damaged reef into one of the world's largest and most successful community-led coral restoration projects. The best part? You don't even need a boat. You simply walk into the water from Pemuteran Beach and within minutes you're floating above colourful coral gardens, schools of tropical fish and incredible underwater sculptures that have become home to thriving marine life. We've snorkelled in quite a few places around Bali, but this one completely blew us away. The water was calm, the visibility was incredible and there was so much to see that we kept saying, "Just five more minutes..." before spending another hour in the water. What made it even more special was knowing that every fish, every coral colony and every underwater structure is part of a community that's chosen conservation over destruction. It's proof of what can happen when locals, scientists and tourism work together. If you're planning a trip to West Bali, don't just pass through on your way to Menjangan Island. Spend a few days in Pemuteran. Slow down. Snorkel the Biorock Project. Watch the sunrise. I have a feeling you'll leave wondering why more people don't know about this incredible corner of Bali. ๐๐ ๐
