Tasting Bali: How Indonesian Food Tells Stories, Connects Families, and Captivates Travelers

One of the most magical things about being in Bali—and Indonesia as a whole—is the way food tells stories. Every dish here feels like a glimpse into someone’s history, culture, or home. We’ll never forget our first proper warung meal after moving here. We sat on plastic chairs under a tin roof, the fan slowly spinning overhead, the smell of sambal and garlic filling the air. A lovely ibu (mother) brought out plates of nasi campur—steamed rice with little portions of everything: spicy tempeh, green beans with coconut, shredded chicken, and a perfectly cooked boiled egg. We didn’t know what half of it was, but we knew it was good. The kind of good that warms your belly and stays in your memory. Indonesian food is vibrant and layered, with sweet, salty, sour, and spicy all playing together in harmony. It’s nasi goreng for breakfast, gado-gado for lunch, and ikan bakar (grilled fish) by the beach as the sun sets. It’s the crunch of fresh krupuk (crackers), the zing of lime squeezed over your noodles, and the unexpected joy of biting into klepon—little green rice balls filled with palm sugar that explode in your mouth like sweet magic. But it’s not just about flavour—it’s about connection. Food here is an invitation. Sit, stay, eat. Even if you don’t speak the same language, a shared meal is enough. And there’s something incredibly special about that. Watching our kids slowly fall in love with Indonesian food has been one of the biggest joys. It started slow—one bite of fried banana here, a sip of coconut water there. Now they ask for mie goreng on the regular and fight over the last skewer of sate ayam. They know the difference between spicy and “Bali spicy” (there is a difference 😂), and they’ve learned that trying something new is usually worth it—even if it’s just once. We’re still learning. Still discovering new dishes and regional flavours. Still amazed at the way food can make you feel welcome, even in a place so far from where you were born. Here in Bali, food is joy. Food is family. Food is culture. And we’re so grateful to taste every bit of it. #BaliFoodLove #BaliWithKids
