Prambanan has been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember, and seeing it in real life was just as powerful as I’d hoped.
Located just outside Yogyakarta, Prambanan is the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia, built in the 9th century and dedicated to the Trimurti.
Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver, and Shiva the destroyer.
The towering central temples rise dramatically into the sky, and once you’re standing there, it’s hard not to feel small in the best possible way.
What really stood out was the detail. The stone carvings tell ancient stories from the Ramayana, and even after centuries, the scale and craftsmanship are breathtaking. This place has survived earthquakes, time, and change and it still commands presence and respect.
It’s open, spacious, and surprisingly peaceful considering how iconic it is. One of those places where history doesn’t feel distant or dusty... it feels alive.
Another long-held dream quietly ticked off… and one we’ll never forget.
Just a short flight from Bali, a visit to Prambanan Temple near Yogyakarta is a cultural experience your family will never forget. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia—and seeing it in person is nothing short of magical.
Built in the 9th century and dedicated to the three main gods of Hinduism—Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver, and Shiva the destroyer—Prambanan tells ancient epic tales through its towering shrines and intricately carved stones. Walking through the massive complex, the sheer scale and detail of the stone reliefs, many of which depict scenes from the Ramayana, is awe-inspiring.
Despite being one of Indonesia’s most iconic landmarks, Prambanan feels open and peaceful—not crowded or rushed. The central temple rises dramatically into the sky, making both kids and adults pause in wonder. It's a powerful reminder of Indonesia's deep spiritual and artistic heritage, and it offers a fascinating contrast to the beachside fun of Bali.
Families can make the most of the visit by joining a guided tour—many are tailored to be kid-friendly, sharing the legends and history in interactive, engaging ways. With its timeless beauty and sacred energy, Prambanan is more than just a sightseeing stop—it’s a chance to truly connect with the country's rich cultural roots.
So if you’re planning a family holiday in Bali, consider adding a day trip (or two) to Yogyakarta to explore Prambanan Temple. It’s a memory-in-the-making, and a way to show your kids that adventure and learning can go hand-in-hand.
