The Life-Saving Travel Essential You Didn’t Know You Needed in Bali

One thing you don’t realise you rely on… until it’s not there. Smoke detectors. They’re just not really a thing here in Bali. Not in villas, not in most guesthouses, not even in a lot of the hotels we’ve stayed in. Maybe it’s the Aussie in me, but I grew up with fire safety drilled into my brain. Stop, drop and roll. Test your alarm monthly. Change your batteries when the clocks change. You know the drill. So walking into a new villa and realising there’s no smoke alarm at all? It made my stomach turn a little. We recently ordered a few through Tokopedia (they weren’t expensive!) and installed them ourselves in the key areas of our villa — the bedrooms, the hallway, near the kitchen. It took maybe 15 minutes total, and now I can sleep easier at night knowing that little beep might just give us the time we need if something ever went wrong. It’s not a dramatic post. It’s not sexy travel content. But it’s important. If you’re living in Bali long-term or even just staying in a villa for your holiday, this is something to think about. Especially if you’re living here or visiting with kids. Ask your villa or guesthouse if they have alarms installed. Bring one with you. Or grab one locally — Tokopedia has plenty. Because honestly? They save lives. And I’d love to see more awareness and action around this across Bali and Indonesia as a whole. Let’s keep each other safe. xx #BaliFamilyFinds #ChadAndMiaOfficial #BaliWithKids #BaliVillaTips #TravelSafety #FamilyTravelAsia #LivingInBali #BaliSafetyTips #FireSafety #SmokeDetectorsSaveLives #BaliHolidayTips

There’s one travel essential that rarely makes the packing list — but it absolutely should, especially if you’re heading to Bali with your family. We’re talking about smoke detectors.

In many parts of the world, smoke alarms are standard in homes, hotels, and rentals. But in Bali, they’re surprisingly rare. Even in private villas, boutique guesthouses, and some hotels, smoke detectors are often missing altogether. It’s not something many visitors realise — until they spot the (troubling) absence.

For Aussie travellers like us, who grew up with fire safety ingrained in everyday life, this was a shock. No smoke alarm in the bedroom? Nothing in the kitchen or hallway? Once we noticed, we couldn’t unsee it — and it became a non-negotiable to sort it out.

So we headed to Tokopedia (Bali’s go-to marketplace), grabbed a few affordable smoke detectors, and installed them ourselves in under 15 minutes. Bedrooms, hallway, kitchen — covered. Instant peace of mind.

If you’re visiting Bali with kids or planning a longer stay, we can't recommend this enough: pack a small smoke detector or buy one locally when you arrive. Ask your accommodation ahead of time if they have alarms installed. If they don’t — now you've got a simple, inexpensive solution.

It might not be the 'sexy' side of travel or something you see on Instagram, but it’s a quiet kind of comfort that matters deeply.

Because yes — smoke detectors save lives. And in a place as beautiful as Bali, keeping your family safe makes every sunset that much sweeter.

#BaliFamilyFinds #BaliVillaTips #TravelSafety #BaliWithKids #SmokeDetectorsSaveLives #LivingInBali #FamilyTravelAsia
