Exploring Taman Sari: A Serene Family Journey Through the Sultan's Water Palace
Taman Sari, the Sultan’s Water Palace, is one of those places that feels layered with stories the moment you walk in. Built in the mid-1700s as part of the Yogyakarta Sultanate, this was once a royal garden and retreat. A place for rest, bathing, and quiet escape from the city. The complex is made up of pools, tunnels, courtyards, and hidden passageways, many of which were later damaged by earthquakes and time, adding to its slightly mysterious feel. One of the most talked-about features is the central tower, where the Sultan would sit above the pools. From there, it’s said he would observe the women bathing below and choose his companion for the evening. Standing there now, it’s surreal to think about how differently this space was once used, and how much history these walls have witnessed. Lola and I took a photo together here, and it felt like one of those quiet, full-circle moments, sharing a place so rich in history, while making our own memories as a family. Taman Sari isn’t grand in the way some landmarks are. It’s softer, more intimate. A place that invites you to slow down, wander, and imagine the lives that once unfolded within its walls. #yogyakartatravel #yogyakarta #javaindonesia #javawithkids
