Riding in Bali hits different after a few months in the sun. At first, I was cruising around in shorts and a t-shirt thinking I was fine… until I realised how harsh the Bali sun really is.
These days I look more like a local:
☀️ UV jacket zipped up
🧣 Sarong over my legs
😷 Mask on, visor down
🧤 Socks and gloves to protect my hands and feet
It’s hot, but trust me—it makes a huge difference when you’re on the bike every day.
In this video I forgot 3 things—can you spot them?
1) I put my hoodie on before my helmet (so no burnt neck, thank you very much)
2) I forgot to zip my backpack… rookie move!
3) I didn’t throw on my socks or gloves.
Little things like this are what make riding in Bali more comfortable, and safer, in the long run.
Would you ride a scooter in Bali or leave it to the locals?

Riding a scooter in Bali feels like the ultimate island adventure—wind in your hair, sun on your skin, and the freedom to explore at your own pace. But after a few weeks of daily rides under the tropical sun, I learned the hard way just how intense Bali’s UV rays can be. Spoiler alert: sunscreen alone isn't enough.
When I first arrived, I was zipping around in a t-shirt and shorts, thinking I was living the dream. Fast-forward a few sunburns later, and you’ll see me looking more like a seasoned local than a tourist: UV jacket fully zipped, sarong over my legs, face mask on, visor down, with socks and gloves to protect every bit of skin.
Yes, it’s hot. But covering up truly makes a huge difference, especially if you’re riding every day. Beyond just sun protection, it also offers a bit more peace of mind in case of scrapes or spills.
On a recent ride, I made a few rookie mistakes—see if you can spot them!
1. Pulled on my hoodie before my helmet (neck protection: ✔️).
2. Forgot to zip my backpack (oops, nearly lost my camera).
3. Skipped the socks and gloves (my hands and ankles paid the price).
If you're visiting Bali with your family, renting scooters is an easy and affordable way to get around. But don’t forget to prioritize safety and comfort. Light layers and full coverage go a long way in this climate. Trust me, your future self will thank you!
Would you hop on a scooter and explore, or leave it to the locals?
⭐ Pro Tip: Buy your gear locally—it’s cheap, functional, and designed for Bali weather.
