A Family Journey to Borobudur: Experiencing the World's Largest Buddhist Temple

Borobudur has been on my bucket list since I was a kid, ever since I saw it in a book and couldn’t quite believe a place like this existed. Standing here in real life felt surreal in the best way. Borobudur is the world’s largest Buddhist temple, built in the 9th century and made from millions of stone blocks, each carved with detailed reliefs that tell stories of life, spirituality, and the path toward enlightenment. It’s designed to be experienced slowly, moving upward level by level, rather than rushed through. The process to visit is actually really thoughtful. We bought our tickets on arrival (we receive a KITAS discount), then waited in a holding area until our timed slot was called. Before entering, we were given Upanat shoes to protect the ancient stone and assigned a waiting number for an English-speaking guide. When it was our turn, we walked through the grounds with our guide, learning the history and symbolism behind the temple, before making our way up through Borobudur itself. You’re guided through the upper levels for around 30 minutes, then given another 30 minutes to explore on your own, before heading back down and out through the park. It was calm, well-organised, and incredibly meaningful. Learning the stories behind the carvings, standing above the jungle, and watching the kids take it all in made the experience even more special. Every single one of us loved it. One of those places that doesn’t just live up to the hype... it stays with you.

Visiting Borobudur has been a dream since childhood—one of those magical places you see in books and wonder if it’s truly real. Seeing it with my family after years of imagining it was beyond words. Located in Central Java, Indonesia, Borobudur is the world’s largest Buddhist temple—built in the 9th century from millions of intricately carved stones that tell age-old stories of life, faith, and enlightenment.

A family visit here isn’t just sightseeing; it’s an experience. The entrance process is smooth and respectful of the site’s sacredness. After purchasing our tickets (tip: families with long-term stay permits like a KITAS can apply for discounts), we waited in a shaded area for our time slot. Before entering the temple, each of us received special Upanat sandals to protect the ancient stones and were assigned a knowledgeable, English-speaking guide.

The experience unfolds slowly—just as it's meant to. We moved through the temple’s three levels, listening to tales carved into the stone: scenes from Buddhist cosmology, teachings about compassion, and vivid snapshots of ancient Javanese life. The upper levels offered stunning panoramic views stretching out over palm forests and misty mountains.

Traveling with kids? Borobudur is a brilliant cultural outing. Our children were captivated by the stories in the carvings and the quiet power of the environment. The 30-minute guided tour followed by time to explore freely kept them engaged without feeling rushed. Plus, the surrounding park offers shaded paths and places to relax afterward.

Only a short flight or overnight trip from Bali, Borobudur is the perfect day-trip for a deeper dive into Indonesia’s heritage. For families looking to blend culture with fun, it’s an unforgettable highlight that—as we discovered—truly stays with you.
