Can you visit Borobudur and Prambanan in one day?
We put it to the test in Yogyakarta… and yep, you absolutely can 😅
We started early at Borobudur, the world’s largest Buddhist temple. It’s over 1,200 years old, built from volcanic stone, and covered in carved panels that tell stories like a giant stone comic book (the kids loved spotting animals and scenes). The views from the top are incredible — but be ready for lots of stairs.
After a quick lunch stop (note to self: Java food is definitely sweeter than Bali 🍚), we headed to Prambanan.
Prambanan is a Hindu temple complex dedicated to Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. The towers are huge and dramatic, and it honestly feels like walking through a storybook set. The scale of it is unreal — especially in the afternoon light.
Was it a big day?
✔️ Lots of walking
✔️ Lots of steps
✔️ Very hot
✔️ Very sweaty
✔️ 100% worth it
One day, two iconic temples, and memories we won’t forget 💛
Can you explore both Borobudur and Prambanan in a single day from Yogyakarta? We put it to the test… and yes, you absolutely can! 😅
Our day began bright and early with a sunrise visit to the magical Borobudur, the world’s largest Buddhist temple and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Built in the 9th century from volcanic stone, this colossal monument is layered like a pyramid and covered in carved relief panels that narrate ancient Buddhist tales. It’s like flipping through a stone comic book — our kids had a blast spotting animals and mythical creatures hidden in the carvings. The climb to the top is steep, but once there, the panoramic view over mist-covered jungles is simply unforgettable.
After soaking in the views (and snapping plenty of photos), we stopped for lunch at a local warung. Heads up: Javanese cuisine leans sweeter than what you’ll find in Bali — but the satay and nasi gudeg hit just the right note after a morning of temple trekking!
Next, we made our way to Prambanan, Indonesia’s largest Hindu temple complex. It’s a striking contrast to Borobudur — towering spires built in honor of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva rise dramatically into the sky. Exploring the grounds in the golden afternoon light felt like stepping into an epic tale. The sheer scale and intricate stonework had us all wide-eyed.
Yes, it was a long, hot day full of walking and stair-climbing — pack sunscreen, plenty of water, and comfy shoes — but the reward? A deeper connection with Indonesian culture, two bucket-list sites ticked in one go, and memories to treasure forever.
If you’re visiting Bali and craving a side adventure, hop over to Yogyakarta. One day, two wonders, and a lifetime of stories to tell 💛
