Is Borobudur Temple in Yogyakarta Worth Visiting with Kids? Everything Families Need to Know
Thinking about visiting Borobudur Temple in Yogyakarta with kids? Here’s what you actually need to know 👇 Borobudur is the largest Buddhist temple in the world, built over 1,200 years ago — and yes, it’s absolutely worth the trip if you’re visiting Java as a family. Is Borobudur kid-friendly? Yes; with a little planning. There are lots of steps, uneven stone surfaces, and very little shade, so comfortable shoes, hats, and water are a must. Our kids loved spotting the stone carvings, counting Buddha statues, and learning the stories behind the reliefs (they tell Buddhist teachings through pictures — think ancient storytelling in stone). Do you need tickets in advance? Yes. Daily visitor numbers are capped and time slots are allocated, especially for climbing the temple structure. Tickets include a guide and special footwear (to protect the stones). Book ahead if you can — same-day availability isn’t guaranteed. Can you climb the temple? Yes, but access is controlled. You’ll be guided in small groups and asked to follow strict rules to protect the site. If you can’t climb, the surrounding grounds are still beautiful and well worth exploring. What’s the best time to visit? Early morning is best — it’s cooler, less crowded, and more comfortable for kids. By late morning it gets hot and humid, especially for little ones. What should families bring? ✔️ Hats & sunscreen ✔️ Good walking shoes ✔️ Water bottles (you do receive a small bottle with your ticket) ✔️ Light, modest clothing (shoulders and knees covered) ✔️ Snacks for after — food options are outside the complex How long do you need? Allow 2–3 hours total. Enough time to explore without exhausting everyone. Borobudur isn’t just a tick-box destination, it’s a powerful cultural experience, and seeing it through your kids’ eyes makes it even more special. Watching them realise how old it is, how it was built without modern tools, and how it still stands today… unforgettable. If you’re planning a Java side trip from Bali, Borobudur is one of those places that stays with you long after you leave 💛 @wonderfulindonesia @borobudurpark
