Buying vs. Renting a Motorbike in Bali: What You Need to Know

After 12 months of renting, we finally took the plunge and bought our own bikes! It felt like a big step—Bali life and motorbikes go hand in hand, but purchasing one comes with a few important things to consider. 💰 Should you buy or rent? Renting is great for short stays or if you’re unsure how long you’ll be in Bali. But after a year, the rental costs start adding up. If you plan to stay long-term, buying a bike can be more cost-effective. After a year of renting, we decided it was time to buy our own motorbikes in Bali. Here's what we learned: Legal Requirements: Domicile Letter: Foreigners need a domicile letter (Surat Keterangan Domisili) from their local banjar (community office) to register a motorbike. Driving License: While not required for purchase, a valid motorcycle license (SIM C) or an International Driving Permit is essential for legal riding. Ownership Documents: BPKB: Proof of ownership. STNK: Vehicle registration papers. These are provided upon purchase. New vs. Used Motorbikes: New: Comes with complete paperwork and warranties. Used: More affordable but verify the condition and authenticity of documents. Safety and Insurance: Safety Gear: Always wear a helmet and appropriate attire. Insurance: Ensure your travel insurance covers motorbike use. Some policies exclude coverage for larger engine capacities, leading to significant expenses in case of accidents. Owning our bikes has given us the freedom to explore Bali at our own pace. If you're considering making the switch from renting to owning, ensure you understand the requirements and responsibilities involved. #BaliLife #MotorbikeAdventures #FromRentingToOwning
