Experiencing the Magic of Galungan and Kuningan: A Family Journey Through Bali’s Most Sacred Traditions
As we wrap up Galungan and Kuningan for 2025, there’s something about this season that still gives me goosebumps — even after living here for over a year and a half. Every time the streets begin to fill with penjor — those tall, curved bamboo poles decorated with coconut leaves, rice, fruit, and flowers — it feels like magic is in the air. It’s the kind of beauty that makes you slow down and just take it all in. But these stunning penjors are more than just decoration. They’re created to represent Mount Agung and the naga (dragon/serpent) — powerful symbols of gratitude, prosperity, and the balance of good over evil. And during Galungan, when it’s believed that ancestral spirits return to visit their families, penjors are like spiritual beacons — lining the roads, guiding the way, and honouring the cycle of life. We’ve come to love this rhythm of Bali life — and while we’re not Balinese, experiencing these celebrations side by side with our neighbours has been something we’ll never take for granted. The kids have started noticing things too. On our drive through the village this week, Fox looked out the window and said, “Mum, they look like they’re bowing to the earth.” And I swear, I had a lump in my throat. Because that’s exactly what it feels like. A quiet honouring. A humble offering. A reminder of how deeply faith, family, and community are woven into everyday life here. Kuningan, which wraps up the 10-day celebration, is filled with golden offerings, marigolds, and yellow rice — representing light, purity, and blessings. It’s a joyful, sacred way to say goodbye to the visiting spirits and invite balance into the days ahead. So if you’re visiting Bali and wondering what all the incredible penjors are about — now you know. And if you get the chance to experience Galungan & Kuningan while you're here, soak it all in. Look up. Slow down. And feel the beauty and meaning in the sky above you 🌾✨ #Galungan2025 #Kuningan2025 #BaliCulture #Penjor #BalineseTradition #CulturalBali #IslandLife #BaliWithKids #BaliMoments #BaliFamilyLife #ChadAndMiaOfficial
