Our Evolving Homeschool Journey Abroad: Why We’re Rethinking the Aussie Curriculum

Loading video player...

This video was from about a year ago and while yes, we are still homeschooling, a few things have changed. We’ve stepped out of the Australian reporting system – living overseas puts us in a bit of a grey area anyway! For now, we’re still following an Aussie curriculum, but I’ll be honest… it’s doing my head in and I’m just about ready to ditch it. Our Year 9 kiddo works pretty independently with weekly check-ins, while with the younger ones we’ve shifted back from so much online learning to more good old-fashioned worksheets and paper. Because let’s be real… Siri makes things too easy, predictive text is a cheeky spelling helper, voice-to-text is next level, and don’t even get me started on ChatGPT at their grade level 😂 Homeschooling is a journey, and we’re figuring it out as we go. If you homeschool, travel school, or do a mix of both—what works best for your family? Would love to hear your tips! #HomeschoolJourney #TravelSchooling #BaliWithKids #HomeschoolLife

Our homeschooling journey has been anything but static—living overseas has certainly kept us on our toes! A year ago, we were still deep in the Australian reporting system, but let’s be honest: living abroad puts us in a bit of a loophole. So, we've decided to step back from formal reporting for now. We’re still loosely following the Aussie curriculum, mostly for structure, but honestly? It’s becoming more of a burden than a benefit. Our Year 9 teen manages most of his learning independently with weekly check-ins, which has been a huge win for everyone. That said, he’s starting to explore his interests more deeply, so we’re thinking about allowing greater flexibility going forward. For our younger kids, we’re slowly phasing out all the tech-heavy online programs. Siri was doing too much of the heavy lifting, predictive text had become the unofficial spelling coach, and let’s not even talk about the creative writing assignments ChatGPT was acing! 😂 Now, it’s back to basics: worksheets, paper, and hands-on learning. We’ve found that this helps them stay more engaged and actually strengthens their understanding far better than screens did. It’s amazing (and a little daunting) how homeschooling shifts depending on where you are and what your kids need at different stages. Some days we feel like we’re winging it—and we definitely are. But that’s the beauty of travel schooling: flexibility, growth, and adapting along the way. If you're schooling your kids while on the road—whether in Bali like us or elsewhere—I’d love to hear what’s working for you. Are you clinging to curriculum, freestyling your way through, or somewhere in between? Drop your tips below! #HomeschoolJourney #TravelSchooling #BaliWithKids #HomeschoolLife
