A Night of Ogoh-Ogoh: Tradition, Art, and Community in Sanur

Just some of the incredible Ogoh-Ogohs we were privileged to witness last night! The creativity, dedication, and sheer effort from all generations of the community were truly next level. A huge thank you to the Sanur area Banjars, the Pecalang, and all the participants—what an unforgettable night of tradition, artistry, and energy! It was amazing to watch once again. Until next year! ✨ #OgohOgoh2025 #Sanur #BaliCulture #Nyepi

Last night in Sanur, we had the unforgettable privilege of witnessing the Ogoh-Ogoh parade—one of Bali’s most awe-inspiring cultural events. As part of the annual Nyepi celebration, this tradition is much more than just a spectacle; it’s a moving expression of Balinese creativity, community spirit, and deep-set beliefs. The Ogoh-Ogoh are large, intricately designed papier-mâché effigies symbolizing negative forces and malevolent spirits. Crafted by local youth organizations in each Banjar (community group), these towering figures are paraded through the streets with the help of hundreds of hands and hearts. Some are eerie, some whimsical, but all display incredible artistry and detailed craftsmanship—appealing to adults and children alike. In Sanur, the energy was electric. Families sat curbside, wide-eyed as the music of gamelan orchestras mingled with the vibrant shouts of performers. The coordination between community members, from enthusiastic teenagers to the watchful Pecalang (traditional security), was remarkable. What struck us most was how inclusive and joyful the entire evening felt—everyone, from toddlers to elders, had their part to play. This is not just a parade, but a cultural heartbeat you can truly feel. For families visiting Bali, the Ogoh-Ogoh parade is a must-see event. It’s educational, entertaining, and offers a rare glimpse into Balinese customs in an accessible and festive atmosphere. Our deepest thanks go out to the Sanur Banjars, the dedicated Pecalang, and every artist, dancer, and organizer who brought magic to the night. Until next year, Ogoh-Ogoh! Don’t forget to plan your Bali visit around Nyepi in March, and make time for this iconic celebration. Trust us—it’ll be a memory your family treasures forever. ✨ #OgohOgoh2025 #Sanur #BaliCulture #Nyepi #FamilyTravelBali
