💡 How do you pay for electricity in Bali?
We get asked this a lot — and the answer is: prepaid electricity!
Yep, most homes here use a top-up system where you buy credit before you use it. We use the GoPay app to recharge our meter — once payment is made, we’re given a unique code to punch directly into the meter box.
🔌 Can it run out and shut everything off?
Uhh… yes. It definitely has before 😂 (hello, unexpected blackout!)
But once you get the hang of checking your balance and topping up regularly, it becomes second nature — just another quirky part of Bali life!
If you’re moving here or planning a longer stay, this is one of those things you’ll want to get familiar with.

<p>If you're planning a move or an extended stay in Bali, one quirky but important detail to know is how electricity works. Spoiler alert: it's prepaid! 💡</p>
<p>Instead of receiving a monthly electricity bill, most homes use a top-up system. You buy credit <em>before</em> using electricity—kind of like topping up your phone. Once you’ve made a payment, you'll receive a unique code that you manually enter into your meter box. It's a little different from what many are used to, but totally manageable once you get the hang of it!</p>
<p>We personally use the <strong>GoPay</strong> app, which makes recharging super convenient. Other digital wallets like DANA or OVO are also popular options. Just check your meter balance regularly, especially during Bali's hotter months when the air-con is working overtime.</p>
<p>And yes — if you forget to top up, the power <em>will</em> shut off without warning. 😅 Trust us, a surprise blackout mid-dinner prep is no fun! But don’t worry: once you enter a new code, power comes back almost instantly.</p>
<p>Moving to Bali comes with its own learning curve, and understanding the electricity system is a key part of settling in. Whether you're staying in a villa, a family home, or a local kost, make sure to ask your landlord or agent how to access and recharge your meter. Once you've got that sorted, it'll just become another part of your Bali routine.</p>
