Slowing Down in a Fast World: What Bali Can Learn from Malioboro Street
This is Malioboro Street slowing down for just a moment. Rows of becaks waiting patiently, drivers chatting, watching the world pass by, while the city hums around them. Old meets new, tradition still working alongside modern city life. It made us wonder… do we need more of this in Bali too? Less rushing. Less noise. More slowing down. Would you ride a becak… or just walk and take it all in? 👀👇
In the heart of Yogyakarta, Malioboro Street pulses with life — but not in the hurried way you might expect. Instead, there’s a gentle rhythm. Rows of becaks (traditional cycle rickshaws) line the street, their drivers chatting, waiting patiently as life swirls slowly around them. There’s charm in the pause. A balance of old and new. And it made us wonder: can Bali take a page from Malioboro’s book?
Bali, while undeniably beautiful, often moves at a faster pace. Traffic, packed itineraries, and endless ‘must-dos’ can tire even the most energetic family. But what if we embraced a slower style of travel here — one that values connection over checklists?
Start with Ubud. Known for its lush rice terraces and spiritual centers, it invites you to breathe slower. Wake early for a gentle family yoga class, wander local markets at your own pace, or take a becak-style ride through the countryside (yes, they exist here too!).
Then there’s Sidemen Valley — a quiet gem where time seems to stand still. Stay in a family-run guesthouse, walk through rice fields, listen to frogs at dusk. Or visit a Balinese compound and learn how traditional crafts are made. Kids love it, and adults come away refreshed.
Even beach time can be reimagined. Skip the most crowded sands and head to places like Pasir Putih in East Bali. No WiFi needed — just sandcastles, fresh coconut water, and the sound of waves.
Sometimes, the best family memories aren’t planned. They happen in the quiet moments, the slow walks, the chats with a local, or watching the sun sink into the sea.
So here’s our invitation: be inspired by the becaks of Malioboro. Let your journey through Bali be less about rushing — and more about simply being.
Would you slow down with us?
